This one has so many construction mistakes I don't want to bother counting them - I suggest reading Squadron's Detail Scale 53 where all are described in detail. All in all the box says "TBF-1", while decals given are for TBM-3 of VT-84 from USS Bunker Hill, 1945.

After profile from Osprey's "Aircraft of the Aces No.10 - Hellcat Aces of World War 2", kills on this particular plane were painted on the starboard side. Only mistake I made is after Italeri's guide - Lt. Stambook's name should also be above the kills on starboard side, and not on port side...
No, paint goes straight from the tin can to the surface... :)
The only time I use thinner is when I work with some old Molak or Precision paint and for cotes (dull and gloss).
Don't know about the Revell kit, I know only that these decals are way too big for this scale (like mixed up with 1/48) :x
