When the Ranger, Yorktown, and Wasp were design the navy wanted to be able to store 2 months of replacement planes on board. They had figured that 25% of the air group's planes would have to be replaced each month. The Essex was designed with a 25% spare ratio of stored planes. This was to...
When I was doing a report in school this is what I found.
1 Fly at night and you can fly lower, you do not need the guns as much, and you do not need formations.
2 Fly lower and you need less fuel and can carry more bombs.
3 Remove guns and gunners and you can carry more bombs.

The survey first listed USAF and it has since been changed. All I was pointing out that many people posted that they liked the USAF during WW2 when it was not around yet.
By the time the Hellcat was in service in the Pacific the navy could keep some of it's carriers at sea at all times by rotating them for yard time. The point is this is a apples and oranges comparison. One plane is land base with long range and the other has good range and can live on a...
The question should be can the P38 go on a 5000 mile mission. The P38 tries to carry lots more fuel and the F6F just brings it's airfield along to refuel it.:)
Thiis is a reminder that wet storage came before the E 8 supension change. Wet storage was used by all 76MM gun tanks and the last 3071 M4A3(W) 75MM gun tanks. There were far more wet storage tanks then "Easy Eight" tanks.
The FM-2 was planed for escort carriers performing ASW and close support. The new engine was lighter and had better power down low. The same reason that the Navy's B-24 version PB4Y-2 got rid of the turbo chargers to save weight.
The other side is if you do not abuse the engines the plane is shot down and you have to replace the whole plane instead of just the engine. This goes along with the Sherman tank that had a gun with a low enough velocity to last 4000 rounds. You replaced fewer guns but more tanks.
Nikolay Gerasimovitch Golodnikov - Major-General (Ret) Flew the P-40 on the Russian front. His opinion was that it was very good against the Bf-109. It is a long 4 part interview but very interesting and well worth reading.
