Range drop tanks and declining returns

Just thought I would post this info on hurricane 2 range. Notice how the increase from 45 to 90 gallon tanks doesn't get a large increase in range the increased weight and drag seems to use up most of the extra fuel capacity. Also notice how much fuel is used at higher boost rates. At 9 lbs...

UK goes all-in on a HMG class gun in the mid-30'ies

Who said they were? Not I. The weight was for comparison purposes as stated. Only the ones modified to take 12 lbs boost as a WEP rating. When introduced into service neither Hurricane or Spitfire were capable of 1,300 hp.

UK goes all-in on a HMG class gun in the mid-30'ies

The Belgians did build two Hurricanes with 4 x .50 mgs. They did not see any combat though. Imho the. 8x .303 armament has been over harshly criticised over the years. Between the hurricane and the spitfire they shot down thousands of ea with the"pea shooters". In the early war years limited to...

    Westland Whirlwind revisited

The Whirlwind probably could have been improved enough to be a viable fighter in the first half of the war. In the end it didn't pass the test of limited resources allocation. The RAF fighter needs were met reasonably well by the Spitfire/Hurricane, Spit 9/ Typhoon and the Spit14/Tempest...

    WWII Fighter Combat Statistics

The Hurricane gets no respect. From, "The Hawker Hurricane" Francis K Mason, Pub 1987, page 211. "Compared with claims recorded in 11,400 traceable air to air combat reports(Forms 1151), covering all RAF fighter pilot's claims, 55 per cent were by Hurricane pilot's, 33 percent by Spitfire...

Why American aces had lower scores than anybody else

I think it was in the "Grand Alliance" , that Churchill said something like before the US was in the war he didn't know if the Allies would win, but after the US was in he knew the Allies would win.

Was Operation Pedestal a greater Axis air attack than any faced by the USN in 1942?

Regarding the Sea Hurricane at Pedestal, using Malta the Spitfire Year as the source the rough kills per aircraft type are, 32 SH1 18.5 kills 20 Fulmars 6.5 kills 10 Martlets 4 kills Overall the SH1 is the best performer and has the best results but very importantly, the...

Was Operation Pedestal a greater Axis air attack than any faced by the USN in 1942?

Do you have evidence of Kittyhawks doing this routinely? The absolute ceiling of a Kittyhawk I is >30,000 ft. This statement cannot be taken seriously. Regarding the Hurricane vs Zero/KI 43 I have posted this many times. This is written by an actual Hurricane pilot who flew many combat...

Was Air Power decisive in the two battles of El Alamein?

Not to be disrespectful to anyone or any writer or researcher, I wouldn't use the term hard data. From much of what I have read I would classify most of the post war accounting of losses as approximate at best. There are just too many conflicting accounts and or incomplete and missing records...

Was Air Power decisive in the two battles of El Alamein?

Keeping on the original subject of the thread I would tend to believe that land power was much more decisive, at least at the 2nd battle of EL Alamein, compared to airpower. Monty's advantage on the ground was large, 2 to 1 in tanks and infantry. The tanks included some of the best the allies...

    Seafire vs. Sea Hurricane

I think the Hurricane would of been one of the easier fighters to convert to folding wings as it already had pin joints holding the outer wing panels in place. I believe the reason this was not done was the usual , just not enough resources to devote to the project, and considering the FAA...
