Which R-4360 based design had the best potential as a true fighter to take on the next wave of piston-engined Axis designs in mid-late 1945? By that I mean Fw 190A-10 (BMW 801F), Fw 190D-13/D-15, Ta 152C/Ta 152H, Bv 155C. Do 335, A7M, J6K, Ki-100, N1K5.
The point here isn't asking "what if XF8B...
I'm getting conflicting reports, most sources report 357 mph, but this SAC manual that I found on this site from 1950 claims 383 mph with 20,000 lbs of bombs. At first I thought that the 1950 document was the B-50 with 3,500 hp Pratt & Whitney R-4360-35's, but the document clearly shows it's for...
Right, but was that assumption correct? What would it really have looked like?
Why not at least build a limited number of Mk IIIs while still building Hurricane Mk IIs? You could have 30% Spit Mk III, 70% Spit Mk V, 60% Hurricane Mk II, and 40% Hurricane Mk I. Send the old Hurricanes to North...
According to wiki, the Spitfire Mk III was not produced in order to allow for the Merlin XX to be used in the Hurricane Mk II. Is this true? Had the Spitfire III instead been chosen, what would the effects have been in 1940-1941? How would the Luftwaffe react to a 400+ mph Spitfire in late 1940...
This is the table I came up with based on data sheets I found. Is this correct? (Please ignore the He 277 and Ju 390)
Data from:
http://wwiiaircraftperformance.org/B-17/B-17G_Standard_Aircraft_Characteristics.pdf
On German bombers
Griehl He 177 277 274
Well this information would be useful to see if Operation Eisenhammer was even technically feasible.
Regarding the English Channel, could the He 177 deliver its max bomb load of 15,000 lbs to England or was its range not enough?
How does the He 177’s bomb load and range compare to other allied bombers of the time such as the Lancaster and B-17G? He 177 data seems to be vague and contradictory, but this sheet gives 6,600 lbs over 2,000 miles.
How much did B-17s and Lancasters typically carry over Germany?
Considering that by 1944 the A-3 and DB 610 had been in "widespread" service for awhile, why would a fantasy figure be used instead of an actual one? I'm not at all saying you're wrong, just trying to understand.
In his appendix, Griehl lists the max speed of the A-1 through A-3/R5 of 298 mph...
Yes I believe so, but would they account for a 40 mph difference? Besides, I am finding discrepancies within and between Griehl's He 177 book along with other sources.
I came across this thread and I saw two contradictory primary sources for the He 177's max speed. I saw 340 mph (550 kph) and 298 mph (480 kph). Does anyone know what the true top speed for this aircraft was, particularly for the A-5 variant? What was the cruise and max speed for a fully loaded...
Do you know how much and at what thickness? It would be interesting to know the performance loss
(BTW, did you not want to PM anymore? Haven't heard from you in awhile tbh)
