    20/20 Hindsight - different armament?

Wouldn't the effect of yawing have a greater effect on the fifty's ability to penetrate than the twenty milimeter? I still don't see how any of this is relevant guys. You still have a situation where each round of twenty milimeter is at least 2.5 times as effective as each one from a fifty.

    20/20 Hindsight - different armament?

I have read that it was a simple task to reduce a guns ROF which increased relaibility and reduced wear on the barrel. If the ROF was reduced to 600 rpm for the twenty milimeter, then the firing time would be increased from 14 seconds to 17.5 seconds which is very respectible. Less jams too...

    20/20 Hindsight - different armament?

Interesting analysis Jank. I think the P-38 carried 150 20mm rounds.

    20/20 Hindsight - different armament?

delcyros - It's easy to get caught up in equations and mathematical formulas. Sal Monela asked earlier how the Hurricane fared under your analysis with 4 x 20mm guns. I'm curious myself but am gonna go out on a limb here and say I bet it would have failed far worse than the Thunderbolt with...

    20/20 Hindsight - different armament?

Did the Hurricane have recoil problems when it fired its guns?

    20/20 Hindsight - different armament?

This is mone of those hindsight questions that don't take into account the realities of why fighters ended up with the armaments they did. Do you think the Americans would have been better off with 20mm's on their planes? Could the P-51 have handled four 20mm's? Could the P-47 have handled...

    Thunderbolt!

I just read Robert Johnson's book Thunderbolt! A really good read. Great discriptions of combat. It's amazing how they were able to mix it up with smaller Me-109's and Fw-190's in their larger Thunderbolts. During one sortie, Johnson's aircraft took an amazing beating and still brought...

Will the real cyclic rate please stand up.

The M2 was considered extremely reliable in its use on aircraft in WWII. As I have been searching further on this subject I seen some figures on cyclic rate as low as 550rpm.

Will the real cyclic rate please stand up.

I have heard claims about the U.S. M2 .50 cal had a cyclic rate that ranged from 700rpm to 850rpm. So what was the real cyclic rate of this gun? I have always thought it was 750rpm.

    Macchi Mc.205 Veltro

What were the best variants of the Me-109 and Fw-190 in frontline service on September 8, 1943 when Italy surrendered? Coo, pictures Sal Monella.

    Macchi Mc.205 Veltro

I have heard that the Veltro could "hold its own" against the Mustang and Spitfire and was the equal to anything the Germands had in 1943. What say you?
