Petrović received pilot training in Royal Yugoslav Air Force before he decided to go to Spain as a volunteer. There he first flew in Breguet and SB-2 bombers, before switching to fighters. He flew Polikarpov I-15 biplanes with 1\26 escuadrilla under the command of Soviet Ivan Yeryomenko.
