20mm rear/tail gun: did it made any difference?

Recently met and had a conversation with a retired USAAAF gunner. He lied about his age and joined and flew missions during the Korean War. He said that some B29 had a 20 MM but the recoil was too heavy for the mountings. The tail gunner position in the B29 was very cramped and some of the missions very long. Later he flew missions in the B52 and it had several gun configurations over the years. I believe he said that now it has a 20MM Gatling gun but with limited ammo supply. One configuration was four M3 50BMGs with a ROF of 1200RPM each. A lot of lead flying. He said the B29 tail gun was fairly effective against jets but the other gun positions not so because of the speed.
