the old Sage
asked about this image to friend CKG just recently ...........
That picture was taken on November 18, 1944. Harry Fisk and I were both from Spokane and the hometown Newspaper wanted a picture of us. I was going to be leading an eight plane mission and was short of time. When I went to get my parachute the bin was empty. It was being repacked so I grabbed the one you see in the picture. After the photographer finished I tried to fasten the leg straps and they were waaaaaaaaaaaaay too short. I almost took it anyway but decided to go back for another one. Forty Five minutes later I was hanging in it - hit by ground fire and had to bail out. The story is in the book.
