Sometime in 1961 - 62 I was ferrying Ex-RCAF Mustangs from their storage site, in ex-RCAF Station Fort Macleod, Alberta.
On this particular flight my associate, Milt Harradence, and I had refueled in Lakehead, Ontario and headed for Syracuse, New York.
At 6,000 feet over the Great Lakes I switched to my fuselage tank to check if there was fuel there.
Nothing but inhibitor oil from its preservation for storage.
Engine reacted violently and shook loose a coolant line.
Lots of vapor and a rapid deceleration.
Harradence thought I had exploded.
Off to our port side, I spotted the airfield at Fort William and glided in that direction, under partial power.
Landed downwind, in the middle of an air show.
They thought I was part of the event.
I left the aircraft there and some helpful guys flew me out in a Percival Proctor.
The aircraft was effectively abandoned there and I recently received this photo from John Dienst, via Jerry Vernon.
A close inspection shows the exhaust intake area taped over.
Does anyone know what happened to this Mustang.
