Actor-director Richard Attenborough dies at 90 | Local News - WESH Home

LONDON (AP) —Acclaimed actor and Oscar-winning director Richard Attenborough, whose film career on both sides of the camera spanned 60 years, has died. He was 90.

The actor's son, Michael Attenborough told the BBC that his father died Sunday.

Attenborough won an Academy Award for best director for his brilliant film "Gandhi" in 1982. But that signature achievement was only one of many highlights of a distinguished career.

Attenborough was one of the most familiar faces on the British arts scene, appearing in a many major Hollywood films and also directing a series of movies. He was also known for his extensive work as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and other humanitarian causes.

He was famous for movies like...

"The Great Escape"
"The Sand Pebbles"
"The Flight of the Phoenix"
"Jurassic Park" as well as directing "Ghandi" and "A Bridge Too Far".

A very fine actor. One of my favorite.

He was chilling as 'Pinkie Brown' in the original (1940s?) film version of Graham Greene's 'Brighton Rock'.
A great actor and proper 'luvvie', he will be missed.

A true great. One of those old-fashioned stars who actually were decent people and didn't strive to hog the limelight 24/7 (and he stayed married to the same woman from 1945 until his death...something of a feat in showbiz!). I never realised he was in the original cast of "The Mousetrap" in the West End. Actor, producer, director...he really did it all and his successes speak to his talents in all 3 areas.

Farewell Dickie. You were the archetypal luvvie actor but you served your country in time of war, enthralled millions with your post-war contributions on stage and screen and stood by your beliefs and principles. I wish more of today's "stars" followed your example. You will be sorely missed!

These guys are still alive from "The Great Escape".......

Lawrence Montaigne (Haynes)
Karl-Otto Alberty (SS Officer Steinach) [this guy has been in a ton of war movies]
David McCallum (Ashley-Pitt)
John Leyton (Willie - Tunnel King)
Angus Lennie (Ives - the Mole)
