A very good book on the escort carriers is "The Little Giants" by William T. Y'blood.

The Fanshaw Bay, CVE-70, was sold to a Japanese firm in 1959 for scrap. It was towed to Japan by tugboat, fighting all the way. I have a a couple of articles detailing that last voyage.

The Fanny Bee earned 2 Presidential Unit Citations, 3 if you add the one from the Phillipine president.

Good info Thorlifter; just a few gaps on the list of ships. The Independence Class were based on cruiser hulls, whereas the CVEs were based on merchant ship hulls. The last surviving of either type was USS Cabot CVE-28 that Old Crow mentions was in Spanish hands as the Dedalo, which was finally scrapped in 2002, although after the Spanish were finished with it in 1989 it was sent to the USA to become a museum ship, but the organisation doing this ran out of money and the ship was sadly scrapped.

CVE-26 to 29 were the Sangamon Class;

CVE-28 Chenango – Fate - Stricken in March 1959 and scrapped in 1962 at the same time as her sister Suwannee.

Bogue Class CVE USS Block Island (not to be confused with CVE-106 of the Commencement Bay Class of the same name) sunk by U 549 on 29 May 1944.

Of the Commencement Bays, Block Island was broken up in Japan in 1960, CVE-114 Rendova was scrapped in 1971 and CVE-115 Bairoko was scrapped in Hong Kong in 1961.

Let's not forget the Saipan CVLs CVL-48 Saipan and CVL-49 Wright; the former stricken in 1975 and the latter stricken in 1977. These were based on the Baltimore Class cruiser hulls. There was also USS Charger, CVE-30, which was sold in 1947. Long Island was withdrawn from service in 1946 and reverted to merchant duties as the Nelly, then the Seven Seas in 1953 untill hulked at Rotterdam in 1966.

Many of the British CVEs, HMS Archer, the Avenger Class, Attacker Class and the Ameer Class were lend lease ships and were returned to the USA post war for disposal.
