In Dordrecht, were I live, there is a very big and very old church. It's existence is first mentioned in the year 1122 and still exists today. While it cchanged from a catholic church to a protestant church, it remained in it's original form, unlike many other churches in the Netherlands. I had the opportunity to visit the attic of this fascinating building, which is a opportunity you don't get that often. I would like to share a few of my pictures.

I made many more pictures of course, so this is just an impression.

    1. The church itself from the outside, you can see the gutter in which I was able to walk later on. The church is about 40 meters high.
    2. View from the tower, from the "Bells attic"
    3. One of the great bells in the tower
    3. magnificent ceiling with the weapon of the city of Dordrech
    4. Walking over the chuch ceiling, consisting of arches
    5. The roof of the church, look at the the huge medieval oak.
    6. Looking down through a hatch. Mind you, the floor is 35 meters down!
    7. While walking through the gutter (also 35 meters high), I had a great view over the old city
    8. You see, I was actually on the roof.
    9. Looking over the length of the church at 25 meters. Unfortunately there were restoring the old organ.:glasses8:

Marcel. What great Photos. If those Stones could talk what stories they could tell. I am always fascinated by photos of Churches Abbeys Castles etc. As you would know Marcel we don't have such buildings like that in Australia.

The History would be fascinating to some one like myself Marcel. Thank you very much for sharing the Photos. You have whet my appetite Marcel

And now I am going to ask the English Contributors to put up some photos of similar buildings in their areas. I would really appreciate it

Yes, every 15 minutes. It's a fully operational church.

I know Emac, and the same counts for our american friends.
To whet your appetite some more, Emac, some of the bricks used to build the church are taken from an ancient castle on the riverbanks. It was destroyed by the citecens of Dordrecht in 1418 and more so by the big the Elisabeth flooding in 1421. If you look real hard you'll find the last remains of this great castle on a desolate spot on the riverbank:

    Great shots, marcel!
For anyone wondering why I choose to live here in Europe, now you know. NZ is a bloody beautiful country, but the oldest buildings are from about 1840. Here in Pécs, the oldest building above ground is from about 1127, while the entire subterannean inner city is ancient Roman.
I do miss our mountains and sea though....

I've been living in Pécs, Hungary for the last six and a half years, Dan.
Left NZ 13 years ago, and have lived in Oz (twice), Sweden, Scotland, Austria and Hungary since then. It's been interesting..!

...Just realized I've never lived in any one town in my entire life as long as I've lived here! (although I have moved 4 times within Pécs).
That's going to require some thinking...(Sorry, I'm still in shock....)
