The above quote, "If it is weird, it is British. If it is ugly, it is French. If it is weird AND ugly, it is Russian." is not mine. I've read that MANY places. It is meant for humor, but does not take into account the realities of aviation design. All designers can turn our beautiful, weird, and / or ugly airplanes.

It leaves out the U.S.A. (among others), which has had it own share of beautiful, weird, and / or ugly airplanes. Here is one both weird and ugly. McDonnell XF-85 Goblin.



Here is a very recent, very ugly one. Boeing X-32.



So, nobody who designs a less-than-beautiful aircraft is out there on their own.

I'm pretty sure we've all seen this one, too. Transavia PL-12 AirTruk.



Not even a mother could love it ... unless she REALLY needed to spray crops. Even then, it would likely be more of tacit acceptance of inability to change it rather than love.

To give the British, French, and Russians their due, here are three of their better-looking efforts:

1) British: Hawker Hunter.



2) French: Dassault Mirage F1.



3) Russians: Sukhoi Su-35.


Different generations, but all of the above are very nice examples of "it looks right, so it flies right." Oh ... maybe just my opinion. Yours may vary.

I had NO IDEA someone could ever cross-breed a Smart Car and a Cessna. The things you can do with gene manipulation, these days!
