That can't be right though. I was under the impression that the first time they saw combat they were slaughtered, or at least soon after it was determined they had no forward armament.

And what were the designers thinking? 4 .303's is not a lot of firepower, especially when you factor in the difficulties of gunner accuracy. And then to have them try to take down medium bombers with those guns...
 
Even Spitfires had trouble with eight of them - I read of Heinkel 111s returning to base during the B.O.B with over 300 bullet holes in them...

With the Defiant, I read she was intended to attack the bombers from beneath, aiming for the bomb bay. Of course German fighters made mince-meat of them once they realised there was no forward armament, as you say.
