What is the faded symbol before the "8"?
Hi rob although the reply could be seen as funny. It isnt. It is a quest to solve what nazi planes were at when the show folded.
It may seem trivial but books are written about it.
A big crowd does have an intrest. So even a doggy 3 , 5 , 8 is a thing.

So it is not just a number. Just that you know

So, to my eyes it could be either a faded 5, a 3 (8?) but it's not in the same style as the 3 in the s/n. It could be a letter. I'm having trouble making it out. Was that a painted out former marking?

Neither the "3" nor "8" because there is no block of the serials started with 382 or 882 for the Fw 190A(F). As I have stated it above either "5" or "6". Judging by the later blown cockpit hood , the yellow band on the engine cowling and the ETC rack under the fuselage it could be the Fw 190F-8. But it should be kept in mind that the F-8 based on the A-8 airframe so the Fw 190A-8 could be either.
