It seems as though the legend of the BF 109 accident rate because of the landing gear has been exaggerated over time.....much like the lack luster performance of the P-40 Warhawk.
With legend, there is usually some truth, but to a much smaller margin than the story tells.
I say this just to make a point. I think it is known in the relatively short time I have been on this board, I have a love for the Allison powerd craft; P-39, P-40, and P-38. That being said, I absolutely love the BF 109 as well. A brilliant fighter without argument. But all have weaknesses.
