1/48 Bf 109E-3 – Defence of Britain/Atlantic GB
Username : Wayne Little
First name : Wayne
Category : Judge – Non competing
Scale : 1/48
Manufacturer / Model : AIRFIX Bf109E-1/E-3/E-7
Extras : OOB Build with probably only Eduard Seatbelts.

The Subject aircraft is a Bf109E-3, flown by Leutnant Karl Leonard of 3/JG53 during the August - September period of 1940 when JG53 applied the distinctive RED band on the cowling over their 'Ace of Spades' Emblem. At this time Lt. Leonard had 2 victories.
See my interpretation of this 109 in profile.
This aircraft carried one version of a number of non standard camouflage patterns applied to the Geschwaders 109's during this period, and is the second in a series I have planned.
See GB 7 for my previous build.

Additional Pics of the Subject aircraft to follow.

The Pics...

The first 2 are earlier images still showing the Ace of Spades emblem on the cowling, the third now showing the Red Band in place of the JG53 emblem.

Nice one Wayne. I think I might have another pic or two of this aircraft - if so, I'll scan and post them here.
Interestingly, some pics of the unit's aircraft still show the 'Pik As' badge in place as late as September, even though by then, it was supposed to have been removed and replaced by the red ring.

Thanks Guys, if you know of any extra pics terry go right ahead and post them!

first bit, some ejector pin marks in the wheel wells removed and the wings assembled in the first stage...:D

Good start Wayne.
I'll have a look in the 'Brothers in Arms' book for extra pics.
Incidentally, those two pics showing the 'Pik As' badge also appear to show an overall yellow cowling, which suggests that the photos were taken during, or after, late August or early September - unless they were taken after the reinstatement of the badge in November.
However, the lighting, and especially the vegetation and foliage in the second pic, suggest it was still summer, which adds weight to the evidence of the badge still being in place, in some cases, during the course of the 'ban'.
Also, notice that the first two are of an E-3, whilst the final pic (with red ring), shows the 'E-4' canopy, and a capped spinner.

Thanks Guys....a bit more to show...

Cockpit started, flaps and ailerons prepped, guns drilled and fitted in cowling...
