I'd use a needle or pin to apply the rivets with very little paint. A paint brush may be too flexible and inconsistent.

I like your idea Michael. If you apply the paint thick enough it will give it a bit of depth but also increases risk that some will tear away with the mask. Worth a try though.

so, more or less this was the completed result of the days effort. hope you guys like it. Im pretty happy.

need to wait for the job to fully cure and then see if there have been any bleeds under the masking

To make the dots, I used a small length of 0.3mm hollow metal tubing held in the pin vice. the paint tended to hold in the tubing, a bit like a pen, which gave me more control . just have to wait and see now.
