A Westbound passenger train destined for Chicago, IL passed the B&O Tower about 6:00 AM and stopped a mile West of the tower to take on water. It was a Fall morning and a little cool. After loading the water it departed for Chicago. Thirty minutes later I received a call from the dispatcher informing me the Flagman was not on the train and instructed me to drive over to the tank as soon as possible to see if he was there. I did so but no sign of him. When the train arrived in Chicago he showed up. He said he got off the train while taking water as was procedure but was late in boarding and managed to squeeze in between two cars. He rode those 80 cold miles in that position without injury. One heck of a ride.
