Very interesting however I do challenge his statement on page 10 that

because it ignores the fact that the 1940 model Hercules which he analysed was, like the R-1820, developed long after that.

With the 1940 engines he evaluated the Herc had 40% more power.

Late model R-1820-82WA engines developed 1,525 hp (1,137 kW) and many late model Hercules (700 srs) engines developed 2,080 hp (1,550 kW) - or 36% more power.

Given these Hercs were civil engines reliability and TBO were far more important selling points than for the R-1820-82 which was a military engine.
