great news ....odd colour scheme though.

I remember, many years ago when they were originally issued, having one of the old Airfix 1/24th scale Mk1 Spits and the undersides of one of the optional squadron schemes for it was this white black split.
I could be wrong but I seem to have some memory those squadron markings being for a plane in Scotland (Edinburgh?) and some mention of nightfighting?

A quick scan around the net found mention of it being an idea to aid anti-aircraft artillary.

It was a scheme brought in in the early war period, to aid identification from the ground. The aim was to reduce the risk of ground fire from friendly forces, and not really anything to do with night use. All day fighters employed this scheme until the change to 'Sky' in June 1940.
