Jg 300 Wilde Sau, was entrusted with finding ways to use standard fighters in the night fighter role. Using Bf 109's and Fw 190's with out radar and using GCI methods they were guide into their targets by ground control talking them in until they could see their targets up close and personal. Eventually some of their aircraft were equipped with radar. While still guided to their targets by ground control, it was until there radar picked it up and then they followed their radar.

The kit, Eduard, depicts two different radar equipped variants. FuG 217 and 218 radar. The first option (A) is a 218 equipped A-8R11 flown by 1./NJGr. 10 formed from an offshoot of JG 300 with the FuG 218, if I'm not mistaken (I'm so confused). the other option are for the FuG 217 with several dipole antennas sticking out of the wings and fuselage. This option interreges me but scares me. The antennas are extremely small PE items. I picked up so music wire but I think it may be just a bit too large to use, given that if I chose this option I'll use it rather then the PE option. The FuG218 is an easier option as the antenna are on a separate sprue tree and you don't have all the dipoles to cut and do.

The kit comes with two fuselage options and two wing options and two PE frets.

I'm on a work stoppage with the XP-55 for at least a week. I think I can start with the engine while I contemplate which aircraft I'm interested in the most. The 218 equipped bird has a lot of appeal. To be honest the 217 dipole scare me just a bit.

Well a quick comparison with the music wire and the PE, though the wire is a bit thicker, I do believe it will do the job. With that in mind, I think that the last selection "D" a Fw190A-7/R-11 flown by Obtlt Klaus Bretschneider holder of the Knights Cross with 34 victory's (14 night kills) at the time of his death on Christmas eve 1944, ironically the day before George Preddy! He was the commander of Staffel 5 JG 300.

Nice choice !

Fitting the engine bearers and keeping everything straight is a bit fiddly when you get to that part Don
I noticed the engine was a build on it's own. But there are several small kits in this one kit along the way. Not sure but a Monogram B-17G might be easier.

yes one of the parts on the sprue is a jig for aligning all the individual exhausts from the cylinders to their outlet positions, you then make up the engine bearers from individual tiny lengths of plastic and glue them to the fuselage then the engine to them then add all the cowl pieces !
