If it's not too late I'd like to participate the GB with the Tamiya FW190-9 1/48 kit
this will be my first FW190 as well as my first GB, so looking forward to it

when trying to research the JG301 Blue 15 I got the impression that profile in the kit may have mistakenly referenced Yellow 15
and this site being as fantastic as it is for information, going to build as JG301, Yellow 15

if I've got that wrong please chime in....

I'll be using Clave's profile found here for reference

thanks Gents

and fubar57 fubar57 I'll check out the TopDrawings...my book repository is sadly way out of balance and anemic compared to my stash :D
I really need to invest in good reference material

This bird is definitely Yellow 15, there is no White strip forward of the Yellow band it is a Lighter coloured section of likely RLM 76.

It also DOES have a thin Red Horizontal Bar not visible in that rear view pic as well as the other ordinary 10 oclock view image either. There is a much sharper image from the 10 oclock view in Vintage eagles book which clearly shows the red Stripe.

Thank you Wayne, much appreciated! I had planned on painting the thin forward strip white, will adjust to 76

I will search for that Vintage Eagles book for the red bar, as you indicated the images I've seen t dont clearly show that

Relying on my memory...I got the book title wrong, it is Captured Eagles by Roger Gaemperle, it is a superb book with many interesting aircraft Pics.

In particular a very good third image of yellow 15 showing the Gruppe bar, the type of film or filter used has shown the forward Yellow Band as darker than the rear Red Band but helps to clearly define the gruppe Bar. The image is considerably cropped from the original but you can see the Ta152 tail to the left to confirm the image is of yellow 15 as seen in the earlier portion of the thread and is used under Fair use purposes to accurately portray this piece of history.

thanks Wayne for the clarification and the image
I did some searching around earlier and found it was the Captured Eagles book you were referencing

I've also been going down a rabbit hole of trying to research this bird, there is a lot of mixed information on the gruppe and saffel as well as profile examples available
that plus I'm learning the luftwaffe structure at the same time I'm in a circular pattern sometimes - another indicator that I should start accumulating more historical reference books

the tail markings look so different in the pictures
one from behind seems to show a light coloured vertical bar in front of the yellow
the others seem to show just the yellow and red
and the one you shared from the book clearly shows the horizontal bar

I'll use the profile reference you just posted, so thank you again

was able to get some progress in on the weekend

the cockpit mostly completed and prepped the inside of the fuselage
the PE looks great but definitely need some patience, especially when some of the small parts go flying, and a steady hand
I'm looking forward to trying some of the 3d printed paper options in the future to see how they compare

Good start Steve. It sounds to me like you are keen on accuracy regarding the scheme. I have the book mentioned above and can help with any needed info, even meet up for a beer if you want to take a look.

The Tamiya D-9 is a nice kit but has some inaccuracies that bothered me. I've addressed them in my build here:

thank you gents

and that is very kind of you, think i'll take you up on that in the near future!
and thank you for the link - will read through that, I did pickup in various places that the kit has some issues, but don't know exactly what

I'm really liking this hobby. it's historical research and knowledge, building skills and an art form onto itself all wrapped into one that allows everyone to do as much, or as little as they choose
I've learned a lot researching and trying to be as accurate as possible, i'm not a pilot, and was almost in the MIL, but used to dream as a kid ha ha
and it's great looking back across your builds and seeing the time & effort, improvements and knowledge gained along the way
