Crickey...only seems a year ago we went to a Flying Legends Airshow and stap me....we've just done it again !!

As per the norm for these kind of events, it was up at 05:30 for the 3 S's, then in the car and off up country. The trip was helped along by copious amounts of 40's hits on the car stereo interspersed with lots of Merlin / Griffon sound tracks (next time you park up in a motorway service area for a pitstop...and I did type pitstop and not pis*top !... play some Warbird soundtrack with volume up and the windows down and just look at an empty patch of sky and point....and just see how many other peeps in the car park stop what they're doing and try and see what you're pointing at....try it, its great fun :) !

The weather had made it mind up to stop trying to cure the water shortage / drought conditions we've been suffering for a few weeks and was just mostly cloudy with the occassional shower and strong wind. This gave us some superb cloudscapes for back drops but as usual, we all had a moan about it. Well, you just have to, don't you !

Overall impressions of the weekend ?. First off, it was safe. There where a number of small incidents but nothing that turned into an accident. The flying display had been subtly changed as a result of lessons learn't from last years event and it all went quite well.

I would say that the participants were down in numbers this year with some notable omissions...no Hurricanes, no Skyraiders , Spitfires where down in numbers and apart from 'Sally B' and the BBMF Lanc, the Ju52 and a very sprightly performance from the sole Dak displaying, no heavies. However, this did not detract from the display and what was present, was flown beautifully. I think its bl**dy fantastic that we do get to see what we see at this show, as costs involved in Warbirds skyrockets and other things happen. If you havent been to a Flying Legends yet....you are really missing out !

Undoubted Star of the show for me was 'SNAFU'. We havent had a Jug in the overhead since 'No Guts No Glory' left for the States a number of years back, and to see an Olive drab Razorback Jug with Invasion Stripes dominating her airspace was a sight to see indeed !

Tony will be adding a whole heap of his pics. For a change this year, we made a concerted effort not to walk around the same places at the same time, to try and capture different shots. You klnow what its like when you and a mate go to an airshow, you end up taking almost idfentical pics !!!. And from what I've seen of tony's pics, its worked quite well this year.

OK, so enough of my drivel, on with pics. As I normally do, I'll start off with some of the 'Oops' shots. Biggest problem at this show (and probably most others when the 'planes are flying low) is that buildings like to think they are photogenic as well and all jump into your shots when you least expect it. That and the back / top of peoples heads . And I must not experiment with the camera settings just before trying to capture a particular image either.... it gets very messy !. Most of my flying pics were taken with the ISO set to 200, shutter likewise unless for a taxy shot, and for the statics, I just put the camera to full auto.

Next up are some general hangar shots. these were all taken in the Fighter Collection hangar. Its quite a special feeling to walk around a hangar (behind ropes of course !) and see at touching distance, the classics from WW2 all sharing floor space. You also get to see just how big some these 'Planes are. I know the Jug weighs in at seven tons, but up close and personal...its frickin huge !!

While poking around in the hangars, I had a chat with the guys from Meier Motors Aircraft at MeierMotors GmbH and asked if there was any chance one of them could take some interior cockpit shots for me, to help with my project. Very apologetically they all had oily hands from working on her a so said I could take them myself !. 4 nanoseconds later, I'm up on the wing snapping away :D

We had a good loong chat about about my '51 on the friday and they all agreed that there is a market out there for a procedures trainer. When we had finished talking, the owner (I didn't get his name at that time for which I apologise !) of the '51 said he had better not shake my hand as it was still oily...yeah righty... one good firm shake later and contact details have been exchanged !.

They had brought over their newly completed TF51 and a Mk8 Spitfire for the show. Yesterday, while I was walking down the flightline, one of the guys walked over to me, shook hands and asked how the show was going for me !. He was genuinely pleased to see me and we had yet another chat during which he explained they had been working on the Mk8 resolving a technical issue so that she could take part in the flying display. I was shocked to say the least, that out of all the thousands of visitors over the weekend, he chose to come and speak to me. These guys are really into their Warbirds and they are all top notch, honest, down to earth, pleasant and enthusiastic about their passion. Thoroughly likeable as well !

Nice pics Gary! Shame some of those 'oops'" shots didn't come out though - that B-17 shot would have been mean!

Cheers mate. Yup, some of the Oops I havent posted would have been pretty good, but hey, can't win 'em all. I took 3528 pics this weekend...and I'm going to bin more than half of them due to camera shake when I had the shutter speed too low, poor camera settings and not looking where I would be shooting the next pic !. All I can say is, thank gawd for digital camera's...this little lot in the good old wet film days would have cost more to be developed than it is to keep a '17 in the air for an hour !!

And speaking of '17's, here is Europes only currently airworthy B-17, 'Sally B'. We used to have the French owned and operated '17 'Pink Lady' but she was grounded due to high insurance costs a number of years ago and placed under cover in a museum. 'Sally' is based here at Duxford and is operated by B17 Preservation.

Ask and ye shall receive !.

From one Grand Old Lady to some considerably younger ones. The Breitling Wing Walkers on their Super Stearmans.

I had the opportunity to enter a free draw to win a wing walking experience with the Breitling Wing Walkers. Yup, I bottled it. I figured that a Stearman (even a Super Stearman) probably wouldn't get airborne with me and wing walker on each arm to keep me company, standing on the top wing :). I have had some pleasant dreams about it tho'

Tony has a special pic I'm hoping he will post...hint hint.

Great stuff! Is that a P-40B in that top shot? Not Lees' Hope but the one with pre-42 US markings?

I took some that even Eric would struggle with :)

Speaking of P40's....that'd be these puppies then !

My fave is the P40 B. She is the ONLY remaining airworthy survivor from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on 7th December 1941 !!. More details here... The Fighter Collection.

She looks so darn shark like and sinister when she's coming down the 'chute onto the display line, and she's fast too.

And moving on from sleek and s*xy, we have....errr....ummmm..... oh h*ll, you decide !

I'd like to introduce you to 'Osa's Ark'

Last time I saw one these Sikorskys was at Oshkosh back in 2005. She's such a different looking airframe (looks like she was designed by five companies that weren't talking to each other !) that she's got her own charm. And the soundtrack from those two radials...sound like a pair of Texan / Harvards flying side by side.

I especially liked the 'flask and glasses in the rear of the cabin, pure class !

Great shots Gary. Love the nose art on the B-17. Must be driving the P.C. people insane.
