    What's this? Half a Ju 188, half a He 219?

    Prototype?

It's a Junkers Ju 288, intended replacement for Ju 88. But teething problems with development of this aircraft were never solved and project was abandoned in favor of Ju 188 and Ju 388 series.

I thought the Ju388 was developed right from the Ju188 as a pressurized high-altitude bomber interceptor since the Ju288 project was underway at the time.

Yes it was. Sequence of designations were out of order there since Ju 288 was abandoned and only after that Ju 188 and Ju 388 were developed.
So it turns out that Ju 288 actually was in some way a predecessor design to Ju 188.
