Hi all,
I am planning to build one of Gollob's mounts (1/72 scale), but instead of going with the more usual suspects, or Bf 109 F-4's, I was thinking about going with F-2's instead. But it seems that the information about his pre-F-4 mounts is quite scarce. Online, I was able to find just one drawn profile image of supposedly F-2, the 'Black 6' with 37 or so victory markings on the rudder. At the same time, the fuel triangle does show 87 octane, which IIRC would indicate F-4 ... well, it's a profile picture anyway.

Does someone know and/or have actual photos of this particular 109 F-2 'Black 6' and was it really one of Gollob's mounts in summer 1941? Or if someone knows other F-2's Gollob was flying around the summer of 1941, any details would be highly appreciated.

Hello,

I don't know a Bf 109F-2 "black 6" flown by Gordon Mac Gollob but I sometimes saw this profile on the web. I don't know the source of this profile but at the beginning of the Operation "Barbarossa" Mac Gollob was StKap. 4./JG3 (so white numbers) and then Gruppenkommandeur II./JG3 from 27 June 1941 (black double chevron markings)...
The known photos are his Bf 109F-4 taken during August 1941 with 33 victory markings on the rudder (maybe this one (before victory markings applied) and photos taken during October or early November 1941with Werner Mölders in the cockpit.

Hi and thanks for your response. This is exactly my problem with the 'Black 6' profile that we've seen floating around. Being the Staffelkapitän of 4th Staffel, I'd assume the number on his mount should've been 'White 1', not 'Black 6'. At the same time, and do correct me if I am wrong, the black number with white outline would indicate the aircraft belonging to the Stabsschwarm, right?

Would be nice to see some photographic evidence if this profile is, indeed, based on facts, or is it an imaginary one.

Hello,

Not necessarily, black number with white outline (or no outline, or sometimes other color outline) is more often a machine from 2nd Staffel in a Gruppe
Here is a Bf 109F "black 6" from 5./JG3 summer 1941.

This machine is also visible in "Jagdfliegerverbände der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1934-1945 teil 6/I". For informations, no mention of a "black 6" flown by Mac Gollob in the book...

Regarding the "black 6" given as an aircraft flown by Mac Gollob, if we refer to the profile concerned, this aircraft looks more like that of the F-4 flown by Alfred Heckmann in summer 1942... Heckmann's mount in July 1942 is a Bf 109F-4 "black 6" from 5./JG3 with 38 victory bars (in white), JG3 emblem on the nose and II Gruppe emblem under the windscreen and yellow band at the last part of the fuselage.
To resume, this one :)

Yes, this is the one that I've found online and is referred to as Gollob's mount, but I dunno where this information comes from.

The photos of Hans von Hahn's Bf also look very similar to this profile, apart from the rudder, victory markings and apparently also missing the JG3 emblem...
