This is the first time since WWII that a Japanese submarine has visited Sydney Harbour. The last time they came all hell broke loose! Anyway, some are seeing it as a bit of a sales pitch for the RAN's next generation of submarines.

I have no comments about the deal as I know how our current defense industry situation is.
Leaders are amateur of production :)

HMAS Rankin docked in Kobe Port, Japan on 6th May to participate in the joint exercise with JMSDF on/after 10th May.
Crew looked tired on TV. Looks not easy job :salute:

    You are welcome, Andy.
JMSDF Submarine Fleet Commander Gen. Seiichi Dohman greets in the video "I am convinced that your honourable visit will deepen our mutual friendship and understanding further."

The SEA1000 contract went to France - DCNS. Apparently they re going to produce a conventionally powered version of the Short-fin Barracuda A1. It's a pity - I think the Japanese could have produced a good product, but I'm not sure how much of the build would have been done in Australia. From what I hear, the subs will be built in SA.
