Good Morning All,

Greetings from a rather sunny(unusually) London.

I recently purchased a large panel section from Avro Lancaster LM289 with the intention to create some wall art with it.

The panel is in surprisingly good condition for its age, and doesn't appear to of been in the ground that long. Based on the photos, does anyone recognise where this part is from on the aircraft?

There are several original marks present on the section, I believe I can make out "PORT INBD FM6716 S". There are also several "FM" stamps and assembly marks, however I would assume they would of been specific to the technician that built it rather than what part it is etc.

Does anyone recognise what this section is/where its from?

Thanks in advance, Will

Rochie, thanks for you fast response... I did wonder if it was part of the landing gear door, which would be located behind the port inboard engine?

Actually all parts of all Lancaster Mks had the 683 prefix. Here there is the 57 one. What is more the round inspection stamps with the FM ### format indicate the Fairey factory rather than the Avro that used the R generally ( R3 or RY in oval ring). However the factory stamp of the R2 ## or R2 xx format but in a circle was used for the Halifax by the Rootes Securities factory .
IMHO the part numbers indicate the Halifax ( Mk.I ... IIRC ) but not the Lancaster. What is more the B letter of the part numbers indicates the wings, ailerons and flaps sections. Usually the digits after the letter indicated the aircraft side. The odd numbers were for the port side while the even ones for the straboard. All of them are the odd numbers. So the panel/piece may come from the port wing.

For example ...

57697 B15 = 57- Halifax airframe, drawings number 697, B = wings, ailerons and flaps, 15
57619 B33 = 57- Halifax airframe, drawings number 619, B = wings, ailerons and flaps, 33
57600 B49 = 57- Halifax airframe, drawings number 600, B = wings, ailerons and flaps, 49

Wurger, that is a really interesting read. Its unfortunate to read that its not from a Lancaster, however its still a really interesting piece.

Are the drawings you mention available to view online?

According to the typed note on the part, the aircraft is identified as LM289, which was a Lancaster with 166 Squadron. Assuming the provenance is correct. If Wurger is correct, then the provenance of the part is not correct.

Hi all , to me it resembles [ using the size of your hand for scale ] and without doing a good parts search ---- a radiator shutter .
That is what I was thinking, but without any evidence.
