Apparently the Fairy Battle and Mk1 Spitfire had adjustable landing lights. The pilot could swivel them.

During WW2 the majority of British aircraft had them, either on the leading edge or retractable under the wing. This can be seen on photographs and cutaways of these aircraft. They are also seen on US, German, Italian, Japanese and Soviet aircraft, being described as landing/taxying lights in some cases. They also appear on some pre-war aircraft so probably were becoming common during the 1930s as aircraft got 'larger' and with better electrical systems. During WW1 and into the 1920s flares (Holt flares) under the wingtips were used to illumination in night landings.
