I think some of that is stupid...when I got my license, I had to provide a notorized birth certificate, what more could DHS possibly hope for?. I'm in the DoJ database and they are able to verify who I am at the click of a button.

And it's been proven that despite the best safeguards, false identities and licenses are easy to obtain.

My state is not on the list, but I fly with my passport anyhow so it would not effect me.

Does that also mean that people from those states can no longer legally purchase fire arms?

My question would be that if 22 states have complied with the new requirement (they've had ten years to do it) why haven't the others?
    Cheers

Illinois is on the list. Good thing I wasted half a day last Friday at the DMV to get my daughter a state ID so she could fly to New York on a school trip.

My only brush with US bureaucracy, apart from visa interviews in the London embassy, has been obtaining a US social security number. I did this in a New York office and have to say that compared with similar offices here in the UK it was quick, smooth and efficient. I arrived at the office fairly late, around 4 pm, and was done in about an hour. No complaints from me!
I'm a bit disappointed with the card, which is exactly that, card, not even plastic :)
    Cheers

It's the fact they've had 10 years to comply with the legislation and still haven't done it that baffles me...

once upon a time in life you could get a brass card ( for a nominal fee of course ) with your name and number stamped onto it. it was a PITA to carry as it did not spring back flat and would make your wallet bulge after sitting down. I still have one floating around somewhere....but the originals you get are more like a business card.

This is Illinois were talking about here. If they had met the requirements I'd be amazed. The State government has been arguing over the budget since last summer so the Secretary of State says he doesn't have the money for postage to send out license plate renewal notices. That doesn't stop then from taking in $100 a crack for the plates or the cops giving out tickets for expired plates to the poor slobs that didn't realize their plate had expired because they didn't get a notice.
