A machine gun MK 214 50 mm, (Me262 A-1a/U4 "Pulkzerstörer"). Two test specimens (and 170 083 111 899 Werk-Nr.). Plant no. 170 083 was captured by the Americans during the war and plunged the uberfhrungsflug from Melun to Cherbourg on the 11th From July 1945.

As a Fuhrungsflugzeug Me 262 A1, and A2, or alternatively, was in the experimental stage situated Me 262 U2 provided with a glazed nose. From Me 262 U2 existed when the war ended just two test patterns, with geringfugig different nose shape. In the glazed nose had a bomb protection space, which should control from here to the dropping of the weapon. It is expected that even for weight reasons rather an A1 or A2 ware have been used.

Because one doesn't have to get as close to the target.

To score hits from a large distant you need to linger there for quite a while, especially if you got a single gun. That means you have to slow down to a speed close to that of the bomber making yourself easy prey for the escorts. It never really worked for the Luftwaffe if there were escorts nearby.

R4M rocket effective range is listed (in Wikipedia) at 600 to 1,000 meters. With the gun sights available during 1945 you won't get hits on moving aircraft from further then that using a 5cm anti-tank gun.

Considering the great number of American escort fighters available on April 16 1945, then Maj. Wilhelm Herget, a night fighter ace of all things, should have been shot down when he attacked some American bombers.

The MK214A had a RoF of 150rpm, so hardly a single shot weapon.

R4M rockets were used at around 600m according to all accounts I've read. But yes that's the beauty of it: You fire fourteen 55mm shots in the same time it takes you to fire a single shot out of a MK214.

Herget shot down a single bomber in the JV44 on one successful mission. You really want to take that as an example of effectiveness? Gee, Siegfried Schubert shot down two B-17s in a single mission, guess the Me 163 was effective after all.

I'd rather have an A-1a with 4x30mm and 14xR4M, thank you.

It was asked why carry such a heavy cannon and that was answered. I don't know where the idea that I think it was an effective weapon is coming from.

Herget didn't shoot down any bombers as the MK214 jammed on both missions.

If they get the auto loader working properly I think a 50mm cannon that fires at 150 rounds per minute would make a fine weapon for a light tank like the 25 ton Panzer Mk III.

Would've likely been more useful in either of those two roles. But probably hard to get inside a turret.

Most tank turrets are larger then the nose of an Me-262 aircraft.
