Very cool, shinpachi. I didn't know the N1K1 had gun pods; and were these modular? Do you know if these could they be removed and did they have to be removed before the N1K1-J could carry any of the bomb load the drawings are suggesting?

It's a good question, mudpuppy!

The gun pods were not modular.
There was no space to contain all the drum magazines in the wing for N1K1-J and -Ja.
The attached image shows how the magazines of two cannons shared the limited space.

But, since N1K1-Jb, it was improved with the belt-type shell loader.
No gun pod was needed anymore.
