Hi,
if you are interested in Italian Regia Aeronautica aeroplanes, you may find of interest this little book (47 pages in A4 format) just printed by the well known Italian historian Giorgio Apostolo:
Aeroffocus20001-vi.jpg

Inside you will find information on almost unknown aircraft or projects like the AUT 18 fighter

and the reconnaissance/medium bomber AUT 45
Aeroffocus20003-vi.jpg

and the very unusual project for a fast fighter, project MB 902, where two DB 605A-1 were to be installed in tandem in the fuselage to power two propellers, paired in tandem and rotating in the opposite sense, to be installed on wings.

Text is in Italian only but if are at all interested you can have a look at Giogio Apostolo website

Seems like an interesting book :)

The last one seems like a mechanical nightmare made true. I, at least, would've never wanted to be part of a design team trying to make that configuration work at all.

Well, something similar, even if not so complicate has been done on the racer Macchi MC 72 where two AS-5 motors were coupled to make the special AS-6. Each engine driving a contra-rotating propeller.
Here are couple of pictures taken from Ali d'Italia special no. 26.
