All the websites that I've visited state it to be 1880 rounds, yet in the North American's P-51D manual it says it's 2080.

Are all those sites mistaking or is it a typo in the manual?

If it was a RNZAF Mustang it would count................. one bro, two bro....
***Oh and if it was RCAF it wold be............ on eh, two eh.
USAAF.................... one, ana two............

just sayin.

***Couldn't help myself. Sorry.

There were different options.
Initially the P-51D was equipped to carry 500 rounds for each inboard gun and 270 for the centre and outboard guns, a total 2,080 rounds. Later versions only carried 400 rounds for the two inboard guns giving a total of 1,180. These are the two different figures which you are finding.

Very interesting. That's not something you see very often.

I looked around a bit and found this:

TO 60JE-14 Modification of armament installation - P-51D

Yes, indeed they reduced it for reliability purposes.
