Easy to tell the staff officers. They have nice warm overshoes for when they are standing around in the snow and ice.

For guard duty, as a collective equipment, the Wehrmacht had a model of felt overshoes with wooden sole worn over the regulation boots for insulation purpose as well as an oversize variant of greatcoat with a huge colar to wear over the regular greatcoat.

My father in law (11th Colonial Engineers Regiment) remembers using them as captured equipment also for guard duty during the winter of 44. When relieved by the replacing sentinel, he had to pass him the boots and coat. By this date, because of the climate the poor Africans of the regiment had for long been regrouped at Marseille and repatriated in Africa, being replaced by metropolitans from the Resistance.
