He's from Chicago, secular name of Robert Francis Prevost.

His father was in the USN and commanded landing craft during landings in Europe, and later was a school district superintendent in Illinois.

He grew up in Dalton IL, just south of Chicago. He received his secondary education at St. Augustine Seminary High School in Holland Michigan, in 1973.
Prevost earned a BS degree in mathematics from Villanova University, an Augustinian college, in 1977. He obtained a Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago in 1982.

His priestly work was conducted in both Peru and the Illinois/Wisconsin area, moving back and forth repeatedly.

He is known as a supporter of Pope Francis' reforms.
