I was on a DC-9 riding in the jump seat during a post "C" Check FCF. We were struck by lightning just below the co-pilot's side window. When we returned to the hangar we found a burn mark the size of a quarter that took the paint off. Then there was this deep scratch than ran from the impact point to the length of the entire fuselage, all the way to the tail and terminated at a static wick. The scratch looks as though someone ran an exacto knife the length of the fuselage.

I had a Blackhawk get hit by lightning. It went in one blade tip cap and came out the blade tip cap across from it. Knocked out the radios and all electrical power. Had to do a landing with almost 0-0 weather into a field.

The German farmer was pretty happy because we messed up his field. He got a nice check from Uncle Sam!

A few days later, a Chinook came over and slung it up to Mannheim for the lengthy repair process...
