silly silly me, i took the back plastic off, and it is A.M. marked and a serial number looks like 5033. and the case is from a 30s smith clock, but i cannot find a issue date ? on the front. she running fine. needs a clean and service i am now thinking, does anybody know yes they put them in early spitfires, pre war ? , is there a date or mark of spit they stopped putting them in 1939 ? spit mark 1 ?, and where they put in hurricanes ? or is that a myth ? can other members look at their clocks to get a idea of the date ? from the serial number love to see some more photos posted. ps how does the time of trip work ?

You appear to have a standard RAF issue 8-day clock from an early wartime aircraft such as a Spitfire or Hurricane. Stamped into the dial face will be the AM serial code the last 2 digits of which (after the /) are the date of issue. The figures are small but I can just make them out from your first pic. Get a magnifying glass and take another look. This type dates from the 30's and was in Spitfires and Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain. Later, the model was replaced by the Mk2 series of cockpit clocks which had red trip time hands set with a pair of knobs on the front glass. SOme of these were wound by turning the outer bezel. I have one of these Mk2s (regrettably broken) dated 1943.

thank you for the reply, the numbers read Ref No 6A/676 maybe another give away it reads S SMITH & SONS(MA) Ltd LONDON .. MOTOR ACCESSORIES ?
The line above reads Mk IIIa. No is blank ?

It's a Smiths Lecoutre Mk.IIIA Chronoflight Aircraft clock dated early 1950's.
thanks for the reply, i have to ask how you came upon that answer ? also love to see some other clocks posted on here so we can compare one against the other

Fantastic and congratulations.

That means the clock itself came from an aircraft and was recycled by being fitted to a plastic housing made post war. And it is not Spitfire as they used the 6A/579 and 6A/581.

Was there a date for that advertisement?

hi, the advertisement i would say is from the late 40s early 50s could even date to the 60s , the clock i found was not issued as there is no date or serial numbers where i have seen them on dated clocks on the face, A.M. marked on the back, another odd thing is the plastic housing is from a 1930s smiths electric mantel clock, in the past cars had clocks added as extras, and when cars were sold the owners took out the clocks and mounted them as mantel clocks ?.

The advert says reconditioned so I would suspect the face was replaced during reconditioning. Does it still have a radium numbered face on it or a non luminous one? It is strange that it is a 1930s case.

the hands are still luminous and working the numbers 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 - 10 . are raised with luminous paint ? where 1 - 3 - 7 - 9 - 11 , are not filled with any paint ? i think someone just put it in a 30s smith mantel case might have even worked at the company ?.

The 6A/676 Clock you have is in original condition and is a tidy example.
The face is standard for the era and and was fitted to many RAF aircraft including early Hurricanes,Spitfires,Wellingtons, ETC... There are original photos showing them.
The Mk III clocks have Swiss made LeCoutre movements, I have attached a copy of the original specs.
Our fellow forum members correctly identified the postwar Smiths 6A/3157 in the Ad you found.
Fitted to postwar RAF aircraft including the EE.Canberra.
I have attached pictures of 3 MkIIIs 6A/581- 6A/676- 6A/839 and 6A/3157.
These clocks are all in their original cases.

Regards Mike
