MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- Two Spanish air force Mirage F-1 fighter jets crashed on Tuesday during a training mission, killing the three crew members on board, Spain's Defense Ministry said on its Web site.
The French-made jets, one a single-seater and the other carrying two pilots, crashed to the ground about 3 kilometers, or 1.9 miles apart, in the province of Albacete east of Madrid, the defense ministry said.
It was not immediately clear if the jets collided in mid-air before striking the ground, and that's under investigation, a defense ministry spokesman told CNN.
The dead pilots were two air force captains and a lieutenant, aged 29 to 33, the ministry Web site said.
