It seems that this was the first gyro not in danger of hitting the stops and "tumbling", regardless of attitude (at least in the UK/US industry, and I suppose that means world-wide).

However, the strange thing is that it has the light part on the bottom half and actually moves the opposite way to the real horizon in pitch ...

The display with "stationary horizon - moving aircraft" the author of the article suggests was apparently preferred by the Soviet aircraft designers, so his idea seems to have been valid, too :)
