If there was one thing that the combat soldier in Italy wanted more than anything else (apart from going home) it was a supply of new socks. Daily the sick list grew as more and more soldiers succumbed to Trench Foot as the dreadful Italian winter weather took its toll.

One day a visiting Member of Parliament, sent out on a fact finding mission, turned up at the billet of a particular unit that had just come out of the line. Surrounded by a throng of indignant men, the MP was informed of their plight in the strongest of terms together with their demands that something be done to resolve the matter.

The MP immediately Cabled the Prime Minister direct, and Winston, with one of his famous 'Action This Day' orders had a consignment of fresh socks packed and put on a top priority aircraft for delivery to Italy within hours.
