His American counterpart is not known. A system issue caused a false incoming launch alert at Cheyenne Mountain. It rippled far enough that my unit was moved into the field in what was called "terminal patrol" in 1979. A SSgt unnamed discovered the cause and was able to convince his superiors it was a glitch just prior to a retaliatory strike being ordered. All of the LCF facilities were in full lockdown and we all pretty much thought the balloon had well and truly gone up!
I had read about this false alarm years ago, but forgotten all about it. We sure owe this guy , and it shows just how precarious nuclear exchanges can be.
