I was going through the https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/page/straitstimes19410217-1.1.1 and I find it noteworthy how two years into the war, with France defeated and Japan occupying FIC, life goes on Singapore and Malaya. There's very little mention of the war amongst the advertisements for movies, dances, cars and consumer goods. I find it fascinating that I'm reading the newspaper and knowing what's coming while those at the time were just doing their best to live their lives. I wonder in eighty years who's reading the archives of today's newspapers, shaking their heads and remarking, "poor devils, if they only knew what was coming."
