I like the Whirlwind and while it was a twin it was a small one, wing had less sq footage than a Hurricane and only 8 more than a Spitfire.

By the time the Merlin 130 came along the Beaufighter had had it's day. By that time if more ooomph was wanted just stuff Hercules 100's into it.

I agree about the Whirlwind, My mother was in fighter command WRAF at Manston in WW2 and she tallked about how fast the Whirlwinds were. An impressive sight by all accounts. I wonder why it was never fully developed though? The Hornet seems to be its spiritual successor.

Fair comment about the Beau. It served well in the far east and as a torpedo bomber.Maybe there was no need to develop it more as we had the Mossie.
