The Berlin Wall and the DDR began their inexorable decline.

This is the Boesebrucke crossing Bornholmerstrasse and it was here at 11:30pm on Saturday 9 November 1989 that the East German border guards reluctantly raised the barrier arm at the border checkpoint and let the thousands of East Berliners who had gathered there through. It was a momentous occasion that rocked the world because of what would come next - the fall of the wall and the Communist Eastern Bloc and eventually the Soviet Union itself.

At vantage points all round the city, hundreds of protesters on both sides had gathered by the wall and began climbing on top of it, chiselling away at it with hammers and axes, with the East German border guards, for once, powerless to stop them. On the 9th November 1989, the wall ran right in front of the Brandenburg Gate and West Berliners stood triumphantly on top of it, beckoning to their East Berlin bretheren to join them.
