    One wonders why naval infantry need to be in mountains?

    Because the only thing today that they have in common with the Navy is the govt. leadership (i.e. Secretary of the Navy).

    Besides the Marines fight in Land Locked countries all the time. The last time the US Marines where just pure "Naval Infantry" was probably 1865. ;) The USMC has Artillery, Armoured Corps, Attack Aircraft, Fighter Aircraft, Infantry, Engineers, Spec Ops, etc...

    The mandate for the US Marines is to operate on both sea AND land. The last time I looked there are mountains on land.

    I knew a few marine buddies who have been to this training.

    I had second thoughts - thought someone might reply that that is an inappropriate role for naval infantry.

    ....and suspect that USMC and USAF, still argue about who should do DAS and CAS, or have they grown out of that sibling rivalry?
