Ghosts of War
Airman
Two of the remaining Messerschmitt Bf-110s left, on display at RAF Museum London (Hendon), UK, and the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin, Germany.
The first two photos are the Hendon aircraft. Museum information states the Bf 110G-4 Werknummer 730301 was likely built in 1944, and is fitted with a FuG220b Liechtenstein SN-2 radar. The aircraft was 'surrendered to the allies at Grove Airfield in Denmark...', having served with 1st Staffel, Nachtjagdgeschwader 3.
The remaining photos are the Deutsches Technikmuseum 110. Museum information states that the Bf 110 F-2, Werknummer 5052 was built in 1942. While serving with Jagdgeschwader 5 based in Finland it sustained damage from anti-aircraft fire and force landed on a frozen lake in Russia. The aircraft subsequently sank when the lake thawed. 'In 1991 the relatively well-preserved wreck was salvaged and brought to England. The Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin purchased this airplane in 1997 together with a second wreck with the identification code MN+ZE...Parts from the second Bf 110 were used to reconstruct the exhibited aircraft.'
