Barrett
Senior Airman
In September 1944 Stars & Stripes published an article about a P-47 pilot who allegedly reached 840 mph (that's eight hundred forty) thus surpassing the previous "record" of 780. Lt. Robert H. Knapp (78th FG) made the absurd claim without any indication of how he determined the speed. (I've seen two or three T-bolt instrument panels; one ASI maxed at 500 and the other at 700, and of course that does not account for the difference between indicated airspeed and true airspeed.)
But I digress.
In looking at Lt. Knapp's record (Olynyk's ETO list) it seems that he claimed one victory, a Fw-190"with Typhoon type airscoop" near Liege on 24 January 44.
Hmmm...
Anybody have a handle on RAF losses that date? I'm pretty confident that whatever the victim was, it could not have been a 190!
