Growing up on the Northshore of Boston, I lived only a few miles from the USCG AIr Station Salem, on Winter's Island. I grew up watching CG Helos and HU-16s or as known in the CG as a UF-1G/2G Albatross. So I managed to find unbuild a USAF HH-19G, the very first model that my Father and I built together. I saw these "Horses" as they were called by the USCG flying patrols almost every days. Even saw some Martin PBM-3 that flew out of Salem when I was really young, they were blue. Being close by we would "visit" them and watch them in the hangers working on the Helos and Seaplanes. So back to the model kit, I did my research, and went a lot on memory. Now must warn you just getting back into modeling after about 55 years, so this is one of my first attempts, but this is as exact as possible of what I use to see fly out of USCG Airsta Salem in the late fifties early sixties. Hope you enjoy, Oh little known fact, ALL USCG AIrcraft that fly our of Salem and now USCG AirSta Cape Cod have a witch on a broom black silhouette on the door or window area of the aircraft. Yup I put one on. Color is as correct as I could find, but they have another yellow that has a hair bit of orange and that is much closer. Hope you enjoy it. I have the Albatross to do yet. Still researching that one, as when time came I joined the USCG and was a Radioman/Navigator on the Albatross for the International Ice Patrols.

In model making, the color yellow is difficult to handle

Give a matt white undercoat and there shouldn't be a problem.
Yes, only the color white doesn't cover well either, plus the yellow. Then you have a thick layer of paint on it. I once let the surface of a model drip with loss of detail.

I've never had a problem with either colour. A white base coat is better when sprayed, and doesn't really need to be perfectly even, just good enough to give a good key and undercoat. Of course, I mean with enamel paints, not those "toy town" acrylics.

I use enamels only. Maybe I shoud try once more.

Although I have read that yellow is difficult, Tamiya does make a shade of Yellow called TS-34 Camel Yellow, which is almost identical to the early USCG color used in 50's Helos. I have couple older Helo Models still to make, and will be using that paint. As far as applying the paint, I use a light gray Tamiya Primer, usually two coats. I spray light coats of yellows and let dry for 24 hours. Really have no issues at all with the color. Will be doing a 34 Ford Coupe in bright Yellow, so we shall see, But I scribe all my lines before and after applying prime for definition. Couple of photos during build, Cockpit details. IMHO...Cheers
