As the US government moves to shutdown its detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, stories are emerging of the way it affected those inside.

Former inmates have talked about the deprivation and pressures they faced.

But Terry Holdbrooks was on the other side. He was a US soldier and he says he saw something in the behaviour of the inmates that changed him. He tells his story to Al Jazeera in his own words.

A testiment to the strength of our country. Anyone can practise their religion without interference from others.

The islamic world can learn a few lessons from this for what all religions really mean.

I also support freedom of religion....but would recommend a change of duty stations for the guy. Conflict of interests and all.

There is no need for a change of duty stations. In Iraq I served with several muslims. They had no problem doing there duty in an Islamic country. They were first and formost Americans and American soldiers.
